Performance based tailor made concrete
A durable structure performs as designed negating the need for costly repair or maintenance.
Durability can be guaranteed by predicting and modelling the various possible deterioration processes likely to affect a structure. Guidelines and test methods have been established for some deterioration processes that simplify this process. Using these, the actual project concrete mix can be modified accordingly so that the effect of these processes on the structure is minimized; a process known as the performance-based design approach.
Performance-based design approaches are becoming more popular due to the influx of new cementitious materials. Moreover, the approach has proved invaluable in determining durability requirements for tailor-made concrete since prescriptive-based approaches alone have been found to be inadequate. Therefore, this research aims at building a foundation for the development of performance-based design approaches for various durability properties.
